Antler headdress are largely a DIY thing at the moment, as they haven't exactly caught on in the mainstream yet. There are a lot of different independent crafters and designers who've created their own for sale, and they're relatively easy to construct yourself if you are handy with some polymer clay and a hot glue gun.
Excuse the instagram photo! It's the only picture I have of them for some reason! |
I've put together an Etsy treasury for some inspiration and window shopping! What I really love about this trend is how it doesn't have to be limited to just one tend. There are antlers in pastel shades paired with delicate pink roses for the Sweet Lolita, foresty antlers in natural colors surrounded by deep jewel toned flowers and leaves for the Classic Lolita, or black-as-night antlers for the Gothic Lolita. Not only that but there are delicate and tiny antlers for the demure Lolita to over the top and oversized pairs for the Lolita who really wants to stand out.
What do you think of this trend? Is it just too silly to take seriously or are you as enchanted as I am by these adorable antlers?
I love the faux antler trend! At the BtSSB Coord Contest at J Pop Summit this year the theme was "Enchanted Forest" and about half the participants (myself included) were sporting them! Pics here.
ReplyDeleteI also made mine out of things I found around the house, but it was with aluminum foil and paper mache! I love that there are several ways to achieve the same effect. My antlers ended up so light that I wore them all day haha.
I never thought of comparing them to the cake hat trend but I surely see the similarities! I wonder what other OTT Classic trends may spring up.
An enchanted forest theme is so perfect for them! I can imagine why so many people were wearing them!
DeleteI have seen some by a few indie brands (I think I Do Declare, but it may have been Moss Marchen or Moss Badger!) actually make theirs out of wire with ribbon wrapped around it! It seems like such a perfect way to do it! Mine were really light because of the paperclay, but I was terrified of breaking them because they were so light (although I am pretty sure paperclay is very sturdy!)
Yeah the theme worked really well! Deer makeup is another thing I've seen a lot and they kind of go hand-in-hand.
DeleteI bet the indie brand ones are lovely! I barely knew what I was doing the entire time hahaha. Did you use wire for structure? I was most worried about it holding it's shape so I basically molded the antlers around wire from the headband. Though I guess paperclay holds it's shape better than paper mache haha!
I can't even tell you how much I love this trend. I don't know if I'll partake, myself, but I love seeing them on other people! In that way, it's exactly like the cake hats of yesteryear.
ReplyDeleteI've heard some people complain about them, but I love headdresses with animal horns as a fashion accessory. (not just deer antlers!) I am planning on adding some ram horns to a dolly kei style headdress that I made. Just as long as I don't end up looking like Tim the Enchanter!
ReplyDeleteI like antlers, they remind me of forest fairies and I love fairytale inspired outfits!
ReplyDeleteBut honestly I will not understand how many Classic + Gothic Lolitas find it ridiculous to wear bunny ears, but then they wear this -.-
I would assume just because some types of ears just have different things associated with them! Bunny ears, to me at least, either say Playboy bunny or a little kid at an Easter party! Neither of which is exactly what many Lolitas are going for. Antlers (not counting the fluffy reindeer kind around Xmas!) are at least as of yet unsullied xD
DeleteThe definitely remind me of fairytales too! That's why I'm really loving them.
I think it's lovely. I definitely need a small pair for everyday outfits.
ReplyDeleteIn the Lake area of Beijing, there are hawkers who sell clip on ears and horns by the roadside. Almost every girl who walked past was wearing a pair, and none of them were lolitas or mori girls. The clips were small and cute, and really good for everyday lolita/mori girl wear. Not too over the top.
ReplyDeleteMy first thought was "Gosh, this is worse than cat-eared headdresses (I know it's a matter of taste with the ears and I don't think they're always ita, but I just don't like them)", but when I saw yours I was pleasantly surprised. They're actually really pretty. They're so elegant and cute and everything that is lolita!!
ReplyDeleteI don't know if I love or hate them... they're complicated I think, but I've seen really amazing coords using deer antlers ,so by now my opinion is not yet forged ^^'
ReplyDeleteI think because I'm both a HUGE fan of Mori Kei styles and a Celtic Pagan who honors the horned god above all other deities - that antlers in fashion just sort of speak to me.
ReplyDeleteI was thinking of making some using small branches and then Papier-mâché over that to create a more natural definition for antlers. Not sure about attaching them to clips or a headband though....
I'm quite fond of the antlers too, there is just something so sweet and silly about them!
ReplyDeleteI need to finally break down and get a pair. I think the deer antler alice bands are super adorable. Wonder if the deer in the woods behind my house would then let me play with them?
ReplyDeleteI love them, there's something so other worldy about them. I knew this trend would though, after fawn fur print became popular.
ReplyDeleteI'm not really into it, but for me, it's like bunny ears - it can be done well and elegantly, and it can be done badly!
ReplyDeleteI love them, but then I love anything like rabbit ears, fox ears etc hehe.
ReplyDeleteI would wear them with a black and yellow outfit. All hail the House Baratheon!
ReplyDeleteAlternatively, Hannibal.
