Metamorphose's Gardening Teddy Print

Meta has recently come out with a new series of prints called Gardening Teddy. The print itself is an all over design covered in classical florals and teddy bears. Click here for the reservation time.
This series offers quite a few different pieces, an OP, 2 JSKs, 2 skirts, an apron and bloomer set, a purse, and matching socks. Lets check out some of the pieces!

First, the OP, which is quite possibly my favorite piece in the set, especially in this brown print. Design wise, Meta pulled out a few classic designs from their early days and added it to one dress. This dress features a button up front, a detachable extra collar to be worn under the smaller collar, long straight sleeves, and Meta's classic 3 tiered skirt. All of this combines into one really cute dress that might not be everyone's cup of tea because of the dated details.

Next is a more modern JSK. This is a pretty standard JSK design with a fitted waist and a big poofy 3 tiered skirt. While the shape is up-to-date this JSK still has a few details in common with the OP before it, namely buttons up the bodice and the 3 tiers. For when you want a little bit of classic Meta, without having to go all out.

Finally is an underbust JSK with a rather simple design, just a few details on the bodice and a ruffle at the bottom. It looks like a cute and comfy dress than can easily be dressed either up or down for a more casual look.

There are no Alice bows in the headdress section of this set, just old fashioned headdresses, like this flat headdress. While these are very nice looking flat headdresses, I really wish they would have released headbows as well, because it's nice to have options. Maybe meta is forcing us to go back to our Lolita roots by offering a cute print series, but only old school school headdresses.

The only other headdress available is this handkerchief. This is a really weird choice of headwear, and honestly I haven't seen anything like this worn with Lolita in a very long time, it's much more of a Natural-kei accessory. Despite it's strangeness, it does match very well with the series, especially the old sleeved OP that it is shown paired with. If the dress were longer it would be the perfect Natural-kei dress set.

The final piece in the series that I'm going to talk about is this bloomer and apron set. In keeping with the old school/Natural-kei look that this set has this is the perfect finishing touch for an outfit. I really wish that they had shown this apron worn with one of the dresses, especially with the OP.

All-in-all, I am liking this set very much, despite some of the strange choices they have made with headwear. What do you think? That they should have played it safe with some more up-to-date designs? Or do you like this nod back to the early days of Lolita?

  1. The print itself is not my cup of tea, but I love how they didn't make head-eating bows, but back-to-basics headdresses. :)

  2. I hate the print in brown. It's like one big blob from far away. A good print ought to stand out a bit more from the background! However, I really like it on the cream background.

And... I actually think that with the right hairstyle, the kerchief could be adorable with lolita.

  3. Not really feeling the print but I love the old school designs. I love that they did this, and I hope it sells well. Unfortunately, not my style, so I won't be buying it, but I really want it to do well anyway - it's so pretty.

  4. I don't really love the print in and of itself. I, however, love the onepiece witt the print because it has such an old-fashioned feel to it. The brown version of the print somehow reminds me of old curtains or a couch sheets or something (the kind you'd see at grandma's or in an old doll house or so)
Somehow that really makes me love it!
Now if only I had the money and/or the guts to wear it...

  5. Seems we have very different views for this print. I posted a very long blog piece about my dislike for fabric mostly, but I do love the designs of the dresses and the headdress is wonderful because I'm not one for head bows.

  8. The cream is the prettiest of the prints! I think that they were going for more of a calico look to the print, which is a very small floral print and this Meta print mimics the look of a calico print very nicely. Of course, it's all just a matter of taste! Calico prints are not very popular because they tend to look very old-fashioned little-house-on-the-prairie, which isn't exactly glamorous, but works very nicely with this dress I think.

I, personally, love how the kerchief is paired with the looped braids in the photos, I think it's just adorable!

  9. Aww XD I think it's a charming print, I think it's supposed to mimic country/natural-kei calico prints, which is a perfect match for the style of dresses! But, then again, I've always loved grandma couch fabric Lolita dresses

  11. hmmm. I sort of like the print, but am not sure yet. I like the first jsk the best, but then again, that might just be because I like the lighter print a bit more. I don't particularly care for either headdress

  12. If you look at other brands, you can see them all sort of branching out a little bit from what is considered "lolita." Designers are always looking to come up with fresh designs and items. And since lolita is so (arguably) fomulaic, they have to do something to keep from getting bored. Some subtle things are the emergence of rompers/jumpers, shorter AP skirts, Baby's love of empire waist, etc. Even Bodyline is branch out (they have a bunch of himegal type stuff coming out soon.)

Also, fashion is constantly repeating it self. IE skinny jeans are just 80's jeans ! Anyway, my point is that Meta's throwback and natural kei items don't really surprise me.

  13. Haha, I was thinking of calico when I first saw this. I suppose I'm prejudiced, since I've always disliked calico intensely. (and for the weirdest reason... I had this computer game as a kid which allowed you to keep virtual pet cats, and EVERY time I adopted a calico cat, it would run away. Every time! So then I learned that there was a fabric called calico, and I just always associated the two. Even now I have this vague feeling of dislike whenever I think of calico fabric! XD )

Yes! It's so sweet and lovely.

  15. Oh I'm not saying I don't like the print, I do! ...in small doses. It's a very small, busy print for a full dress, but I do like the rich natural colors Meta chose for the fall. It give me hope for their other releases.

  16. I love it, the headdresses! Babushkas are my new katyushas! And they look less weird. They are good in mori/dollykei/ethnic lolita/country/casual/etc.

But for sugar's sake, white&black striped stockings to a pink, floral pinted dress? In an official photo?

  19. I'm loving it, and the headkerchief is adorable!  I'd still like to see more solids.  As regards Meta in recent years, I'd been wondering why I was less obsessed with them these days, and you finally pinned it down for me: they've become a lot like Angelic Pretty and Baby, leaning more towards the OTT Sweet side.  I like Sweet in theory, but it would never work on me.  I'm in my mid-twenties, with a long, chiseled face.  And I just prefer proper-young-lady cute to baby-in-a-bassinet cute.  Victorian Maiden is my personal ideal.
